Citizens, not soldiers

The squad

Not soldiers. A grounded pilot, a trauma nurse and a 19-year-old volunteer who looked up and decided the sky over their town is not for sale.

Squad leader

Elijah

Flew for a living until they grounded him. Now he reads the sky for his street. Squad leader by experience, not by rank.

Calls the bearing first

Elijah flew fast jets until a medical board took his wings. He kept the habits: the scan, the clock, the calm voice on the radio. When the Empire of Zod sent its drones over his town, he worked out what one trained eye could do with the right kit.

He runs the squad the way he used to fly: brief it, fly it, debrief it. He knows how a pilot thinks about altitude and angle, so he knows where a drone will be before it gets there.

In the field

Calls the bearing, sets the order of fire, keeps the tally honest.

Brief it. Fly it. Bring them down.

Veronica

Trauma nurse. They hit her home. She is done treating the damage; she is stopping it upstream.

Never wastes a shot

Veronica has seen what the drones do on the ground, up close, at three in the morning. The night a strike hit her own home, she finished her shift.

In the squad she is the steadiest pair of hands on the launcher: fast to set up, slow to waste a shot, and completely unwilling to let a hovering drone finish its job.

In the field

Holds the lock longest. Never wastes a Peregrine.

I patch people up. Today I stop the thing that hurts them.

First to spot it

Danny was halfway through his degree when the first raids came over. He volunteered that week. Nobody asked him to; he just could not watch it on a screen any more.

He is the youngest in the squad and the fastest with the system. Links, seekers, the Field Manual: he learned them in a weekend and spots the tell before anyone else.

In the field

Runs the links and the Field Manual. First to spot the tell.

They automated the attack. We automated the answer.

The enemy

The Empire of Zod

A fictional empire with a very real appetite. It sends drones first and boots after. Its soldiers wear black, seal their faces behind red-lensed respirators and carry the Watcher on the left sleeve.

Zod does not negotiate with the sky. It fills it. Your job is to empty it again. Learn its shapes and sounds in the Field Manual.
